Background

The idea of this app is based on my teammate’s personal experience. He often finds it challenging to look for a sports partner. He wants to do sports activities, but sometimes he can’t find enough people to do a particular sport.

Problem Hypothesis

Our team discussions also found another issue that people could encounter after meeting with a sports partner or sports group they had never met before. It can be not very comforting when joining a sports partner or sports group if talking with people you have never known before isn’t your greatest strength. On top of that, the person should feel safe when they decide to meet with a stranger.

User Research

We discussed the problems users might encounter as a hypothesis that we will validate later in the user research process. Below is a list of frameworks that we used for the research process.

a. Contextual Information

In this phase, we are trying to figure out the main problem when looking for a sports partner and do sports activities based on our personal experience as a hypothesis.

1). There are sports that you cannot do alone.
2). Not everyone has enough friends to do a particular sport.
3). How far is the meeting point location?
4). What reason influences people’s willingness to exercise with strangers.
5). How to provide safety when we meet strangers.

b. Research Goals

We want to gain knowledge about the user behavior when doing sports activities. And implement this knowledge in our development product to help people find a better solution for doing sports activities.

c. Research Questions

We want to gain knowledge about the user behavior when doing sports activities. And implement this knowledge in our development product to help people find a better solution for doing sports activities.

1). User Identification & Screening.
2). User Behavior When Doing Sports Activities.
3). User Preferences On Choosing Sports Partner.

d. Research Method

To answer those questions, we decided to choose a survey method. We use the survey method because that’s the only effective method we can use at that time, considering we don’t have enough time before the challenge deadline.

e. Respondent Profile

Our respondent at least must have more or less these criteria:

Define

After conducting user research, we defined the problem. At this phase, we try to observe our findings from the survey and synthesize them to determine the core problems, also looking for new insight.

1. Synthesizing Research

After collecting and organizing data from 20 respondents, we divided our research findings based on quantitative & qualitative data. Then begin the synthesis process to find valuable insights that we proceed into POV (Point of View) and HMW (How Might We) to help us ideate and design decisions.
Here’s the data transcription that we think are valuable:
Data quantitative
Data qualitative

2. Validate User Problem

While synthesizing, we also validate some of the main problems discussed at the beginning of the research process. For example, in our hypothesis, our respondent often feels uncomfortable when communicating with a new person. They also feel worried that something terrible will happen to them.
The interesting point is, most of them are still interested in meeting new people on doing sports activities together, even though they’re worried or have this social barrier that exists when meeting new people.

3. POV (Point of View)

After conducting user research and synthesizing the process, create a guiding statement that focuses on specific users, insights, and needs.

4. HMW (How Might We)

After creating a point of view, we frame that point of view as a question to help us in the ideation process. I only focused on two How Might We questions that I think are represent the user’s primary problem and could help in my design decision.
How Might We?

Ideation

After conducting research, we started to generate ideas and decided to explore which features we wanted to develop independently in this phase.

  1. Sports preferences.

  2. Search sports activities.

  3. Create sports activities.

  4. Smart Suggestions.

Design

Wireframe

First, I design the wireframe so that I can easily map out my design ideas. The wireframe can be accessed below.

Design System

Iconography

I decided to design pixel-perfect icon sets for this app so that I could control the consistency of the design style. The challenge was to snap the corners at difficult angles to achieve pixel-perfect icons.
